An honor killing or shame killing is the homicide of a member of a family by other members, due to the perpetrators' belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon the family. A father killed his own daughter because she eloped with a boy from another caste and was in love with him in Khuntsamalei village of Bolangir district in Odisha.The father, after finding the place where they have eloped to, reached there with his family and strangled the girl to death. In this classic case of honor killing, the parents fled away from the place of murder and never returned to their village. In August 2010, the legal cell of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) headed by Kirti Singh, in consultation with many women’s organisations and individuals, drafted a comprehensive law entitled “The Prevention of Crimes in the Name of Honour and Tradition Bill” and gave it to the government. The Bill defines honour crimes in relation to a violation of the rights of the couple. The Bill which was tabled infront of multiple governments is pending as it is and has not been passed into a law. Meanwhile in India more and more people fall victim to the shameful affair of honor killings. |
